About the collection

The cases show the development of porcelain vessels in Derbyshire from the 17th century onwards, exploring stories and themes based on visitor feedback.

What can I see?

The collection of historic factory made ceramics on display in this gallery shows the range of wonderful tableware produced in Derby and the local area. Ranging from the finest quality porcelain produced by the 18th Century Derby Porcelain Company and the later Royal Crown Derby factory, to the more everyday 20th Century wares from Denby and T.G. Green.

What can I do?

Spend time within the resources area; a space co-designed with students from The University of Derby, it is packed with books and objects to handle. Here you can take a look at some of the preparatory sketches and watercolour designs that were hand painted onto objects and see some of the tools that were used by ceramics makers.

What can I learn?

Learn about the history of ceramics making in Derbyshire, including some of the famous and lesser known makers. Discover more about some of the people who created Derby’s ceramics, the techniques they used and the ways in which making ceramics is still important to Derby today.

After you have enjoyed the collection, why not visit Pickford’s House to see the table laid with porcelain in the Dining Room?

Porcelain making continues today at Royal Crown Derby. Visit their Museum and Visitor Centre to find out more.
