Jack taking the cow to market

Jack and the Beanstalk, a toy theatre performance by Sarah Peasgood

Pickford’s House23 November 2024

This is a charming atmospheric delight for the senses – a happy tale of how Jack rescues the fairies from the giant’s castle by climbing a beanstalk grown from magic beans.

‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ is an English Toy Theatre play made and hand coloured from Victorian printed sheets. The scenery and figures were by the publisher Webb and the proscenium by John Redington

The script was adapted from an original Webb’s 1820 Pantomime

True to the English toy theatre tradition it is narrated live with simple lighting, music and dramatic theatrical sound effects. The glittered characters are particularly attractive and some unique jointed trick figures add an additional element of surprise.
