Workshop and Studio Supervisor

Derby’s Museum of Making is going from strength to strength. On the site of the world’s first factory, this unique public space has been designed to inspire visitors to experiment with new crafts and creativity, stimulated by the collections that showcase Derby’s 300 year history of making and innovation. Designed and made by the people and industries of Derby, the Museum of Making is truly unique, a must-visit destination for those in the East Midlands and beyond.

To make this experience even more exceptional, we are looking for a passionate individual to be our Workshop and Studio Supervisor to assist the Workshop Manager in running the workshop and studio making spaces and offering a wide range of making activities for all ages. The ideal candidate will…

  • Have great making skills and be able to run public activities independently
  • Have experience of working in a busy making or manufacturing environment
  • Be comfortable with undertaking a supervisory role
  • Have a passion for technical education
  • Have a sound knowledge of and practical experience in making, engineering or craft, and have a background associated with current skills and practices
  • Have a positive, proactive attitude and be well organised with an aptitude for teamwork
  • You will be committed to empowering our visitors by enabling them to discover new aptitudes and techniques, while ensuring we deliver a safe and enjoyable experience for our workshop and studio members, users, makers, visitors, and audiences.

Applications from makers with a background in areas currently not covered by Museum of Making staff, such as engineering, textiles and ceramics, are especially welcome. Training will be provided and supported in areas of technical practice where candidates are inexperienced.

We believe that diversity and equality within our workplace, programmes and in our outlook is crucial. We therefore particularly welcome applications from candidates that are under-represented at Derby Museums and within the heritage sector, including black and minority ethnic candidates and/or candidates with a disability.
