A View of Derby: The Alfred Edward Goodey Collection of ‘Old Derby’ Pictures

Museum & Art Gallery23 March 2024 - 26 May 2024

A special, temporary exhibition of one of Derby Museums’ best-loved collections showcasing a selection of paintings, drawings, prints, and other objects from the Alfred Edward Goodey collection of ‘old Derby pictures’.

Between 1936 and 1945 the people of Derby were presented with a gift of over 500 paintings, prints, drawings, and photographs of the town, dating from the late 1600s through to the early 1930s. The donor was Alfred Edward Goodey and his collection of ‘Old Derby Pictures’ would go down in local history as the largest and most important visual record of the town’s development ever created.

This exhibition presents highlights from his vast collection, as well as other objects that explore some of the context behind its creation and what it means to Derby and its people today.

As part of the exhibition we will be inviting visitors to share their memories and knowledge of the places depicted in the hope that we can build up a fuller picture of individual items and the collection more broadly.
