Displaced: From the Nile to the Derwent

Museum & Art Gallery5 July 2024 - 24 November 2024

Derby’s Egyptian collection is re-examined in a thought-provoking exhibition, enhanced by loans from national museums

Derby Museums is bringing its collections from ancient Egypt together in a special exhibition at Derby Museum and Art Gallery. Featuring over 80 objects and the remains of three mummified humans, the displays will explore why these collections are here, and how they travelled all the way from North Africa.

Derby’s collections will be joined by world-class loans from the British Museum, Manchester Museum and more. New research will help tell previously untold stories, exploring the history of the collection and Derbyshire’s links with Egypt; critically examining previous displays and opening up discussions around colonial collections and the display of human remains.

There will be lots of opportunities to take part in our journey, as we look afresh at the extraordinary objects that are now in Derby and create plans for a new, permanent Egypt display.

Suitable for all. No booking required please pay at the front desk on entry.

During the exhibition there will be opportunities to enter the exhibition for FREE:

  • Sunday 25 August
  • Monday 26 August

On Wednesday 31 July for the National Lottery Heritage Fund date we will offer visitors who bring a lottery ticket or scratch card with them FREE entry to the exhibition.
