Derby’s Grand Theatre, which once stood on Babington Lane, was the site of the world premiere of Hamilton Deane’s adaptation of Dracula, on 15 May 1924. Bela Lugosi, the Hungarian-American actor who played the role in the 1931 film, visited Derby in 1951 to star in a revival of the play at the Hippodrome Theatre on Green Lane.

Matt says: “My practice covers a variety of disciplines reflecting my interests. Origami has always been a passion of mine. As a member of the British Origami Society, we often and share techniques and designs. A recent model of my own is Dracula with a flowing cape.

During my fine art degree at The University of Derby in the 90s my specialism was artists’ books. This led to training and a career at a bindery. I have now been a conservation bookbinder for the last 24 years. I restore treasured and antiquated books, optical toys, and toy theatres.

I have regularly run workshops for a variety of groups, in hospitals (for patients and staff wellbeing), museums, colleges/universities and even in pubs. I also work at Derby Museums as Curator of Visual Art.”

Presented as part of Dracula returns to Derby, an AHRC-funded research project led by the University of Derby in partnership with Derby Museums, Derby Theatre, Bournemouth University and Sheffield Hallam University. A series of public workshops and events that connect the city with the world’s most famous vampire.

Suitable for adults. Booking essential.
