Make and use a drop spindle

Museum of Making28 February 2026

Learn the skills to make hand spun yarn on a spindle that you have made yourself!

In the morning of this all day workshop you will learn how to use equipment in the museum’s on-site workshop to make two spindles and then in the afternoon you will discover the history of spinning and learn how to use your own newly crafted spindles.

Each participant will use a mixture of British and International sheep wools and silk to spin their very own yarn just as people did throughout time. The course costs include the materials to make two spindles as well as approximately 95 grams of fibre to spin with in the workshop and take home.
One spindle will be crafted from natural timber using the wood turning lathe and you will use casting techniques to produce the second, instructed and supported by our Workshop team.

You will leave this workshop with two spindles, a small skein of hand spun yarn and the skills (and supplies) to make many more metres of yarn.

It is essential those with wool and lanolin allergies declare their allergy so suitable alternative fibres can be supplied for them.

Booking essential, suitable for adults 18+.
