Florence Nightingale – The Lady with the Lamp

Location – DERBY MUSEUM & ART GALLERY

Duration: 120 minutes

Booking and Prices: £6.50 + VAT per pupil. This session allows 25 pupils (minimum) to 35 pupils (maximum).

Session Description: Learn about the life of Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of modern nursing. Watch as Florence (alongside our expert facilitators) shares the story of her life, from growing up in Derbyshire to the Crimean War and the hospital where she worked in Scutari. The children will enact scenes from the hospital dressed as nurses and soldiers, learn about hygiene, nutrition and medical practices with a range of handling objects. They’ll also learn about Mary Seacole and Florence’s legacy on some of today’s nurses.

Curricula:

  • History (A history study of Florence Nightingale’s (and Mary Seacole’s) importance with links toDerbyshire and the world; events beyond living memory that are significant globally; the lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to international achievements; gain historical perspective by placing their growing knowledge into different contexts, understanding the connections between, economic, military, political, religious and social history.
  • Geography (develop a knowledge of the world, the UK, and counties of Europe)
  • Science (Explore what humans need to stay healthy, such as clean water and medicines, and connect these to the actions of both women in improving healthcare. Additionally, Nightingale’s work with data to improve patient care introduces the idea of evidence-based practice)
  • STEAM learning
