Session Description: Uncover how Science has powered the machines and inventions of Derby and Derbyshire’s rich heritage. Your learners will explore the galleries where they will discover a wealth of examples of gears, levers and pulleys, and learn how they were used to move looms, clocks, railways and the rest! They will even see our beam engine in full operation and talk about the modern every day uses in their lives. Practical enquiry-based learning in our studios will allow your learners to dig deep in their understanding of how gears, levers and pulleys work and get familiar with the vocabulary of load, effort, ratio, fulcrum, distance! Bring your physics and DT curriculums to life!

Session Curricula:

  • Design and Technology (understand and use mechanical systems; work in a range of relevant contexts – culture and history)
  • Science (recognise that some mechanisms allow a smaller force to have greater affect, understanding and using scientific vocabulary in practical activities; observe closely and systematically, using simple equipment; test, make predictions and ask questions)
  • History (Chronologically explore the development of technology and industry over time in the galleries)
  • STEAM Learning
