Session Description: In this session, students will discover and explore how the museum’s Curators have displayed the collections by materials, understanding the displays and expanding scientific vocabulary regarding materials. Student will then apply their knowledge and make a 3D object that is the solution to a real life problem. Students will be supported in thinking about material suitability, how to make stable structures, and how to turn their ideas into a reality, using a wide range of tools and equipment in our making studios.

Session Curricula:

  • Science (identify and name a variety of materials; compare and group everyday materials and discuss properties using scientific vocabulary; compare and discuss the suitability of a variety of everyday materials and objects in the galleries; changes of materials by squashing, bending, twisting, stretching)
  • History (understand how our knowledge of the past is constructed from a range of sources)
  • Design and Technology (select from a wide range of tools to perform practical tasks; select from a range of materials and explore their functional properties; apply their understanding of how to attach, strengthen and cut materials)
  • STEAM Learning
