Ancient Egypt in Derby: From the Nile to the Derwent

Duration: 120 minutes 

Key Stage: Key Stage 2

Session Description: Immerse your class in a rich ancient Egyptian experience with our Egyptology collection and find out why these artefacts are in Derby. The children will learn how to read and write hieroglyphs and hear the fascinating story of the scribe Ramose, finding out about life in Ancient Egypt over 3000 years ago. The class will be split into groups where they will learn about mummification, see real artefacts, handle some replica shabtis and visit Pypyu and Pa-Sheri, the mummified people who are in the care of Derby Museums, Within this session, the students will create some artwork using carbon paper, drawing a shabti to take home!

Session Curricula: 

  • History (Chronological understanding of British and world history; establishing a clear narrative of Ancient Egypt; develop appropriate use of historical terms; The achievements of Ancient Civilisations: depth study of how and why Ancient Egyptian artefacts are in Derby)
  • Art and Design (develop techniques with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art and design)
  • STEAM Learning
