Vikings and Anglo-Saxons

Session Description: Were the Vikings raiders, invaders or traders? This session, which utilises the new galleries, focuses on the Viking settlement of Britain and the conflicts with the Anglo-Saxons, with particular reference to Derby. Pupils will examine Anglo-Saxon stone artefacts from Repton and Derby, see and learn about Viking burials, and handle artefacts and objects that tell us about Viking life. Children will write in Viking runes and will also make a Hammer of Thor pendant complete with ‘traded’ beads.

Session Curricula:

  • History (The Viking and Anglo Saxon struggle for the Kingdom of England: depth study their impact on Derby and Derbyshire; establish a clear narrative for the Viking and Anglo Saxon period; understand how knowledge of the past is constructed from a range of sources)
  • Geography (locating the UK and European countries on maps in an historical context; natural resources used for trade)
  • Art and Design (develop techniques and use of materials with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of art and design)
  • STEAM Learning
