Duration: Full-day session

Booking and Prices: £12.00 + VAT per pupil. This session allows 25 pupils (minimum) to 35 pupils (maximum).

Did you know that Derby Museums used innovative and collaborative processes, including Human-Centred Design Approaches, to design,  develop and build The Museum of Making? In this hands-on session your students will learn about the design of the museum and how those principles can be applied to product design.

The students will create an innovative and sustainable new product and then use a range of tools in our Learning Studios to create (and market!) a new, appealing product.

Session Curricula:

  • Science (Learn about the Earth and Atmosphere including the production of carbon dioxide by human activity and the impact on climate)
  • History (Chronologically explore the development of technology and industry over time in the galleries. Develop their ideas about the industrial revolution of Britain)
  • Art and Design (Develop creativity and ideas and increase proficiency in their execution)
  • Design and Technology (understand how key events and processes in design and technology have helped shape the world, understand and develop an iterative process of designing and making, take inspiration from a diverse range of manufactured objects, inform design of innovative, functional, appealing products that respond to needs and use a variety of approaches like user-centred design to generate creative ideas)
  • STEAM Learning 

Skills and Knowledge: Collaborative working, communicating ideas, craft and making, creativity, critical thinking, curiosity, culture, Derby/Derbyshire heritage, discussion, evaluating, exploring ideas, experimenting, fine motor skills, key vocabulary, museum learning, observing museum collections, questioning, risk taking, speaking and listening, tracing aspects of national history in the locality, environmental issues.
