Not your usual run of the mill gift, this small plaque commemorating the last pipe cast at Stanton Works in Stanton-by-Dale in Derbyshire is a chance to be involved with a unique piece of Derbyshire’s manufacturing history. There has been iron working in the area since the Roman times and the firm produced quality ironworks until it’s closure in 2007. The origins of the Stanton Works can be found in 1846 when Benjamin Smith with his son Josiah started production with 3 blast furnaces, it was later taken on by the Crompton family renamed The Stanton Iron Company and finally in 1967 became part of British Steel. In its time the company has produced an awe inspiring range of products, from pipes to pig iron, street furniture, lighting and tunnels (used in the construction of the London Underground) to shell casings, gun barrels and components for concrete air-raid shelters. The Stanton Works has been part of the lives of so many of the Derbyshire people that this plaque could be just what you have been searching for.
