Painter and Place: exhibiting Wright in nineteenth-century Derby with Dr Alice Insley

Discover how Wright’s close association with his hometown has shaped the artist we know today.

As his nickname ‘Wright of Derby’ makes clear, Joseph Wright’s close association with his hometown was, and is, an integral part of his artistic identity.

Indeed, this was the name that Wright claimed and promoted in his lifetime. But, as this talk will show, it is also an identity and connection that has been shaped and developed over time. Far from falling into neglect, it will demonstrate how Wright was championed within Derby in the 100 years after his death. There was an exhibition of his work almost every decade of the century, laying the foundations for the museum collection we know today.
